It's nothing new. Even in the 18th century tattoos were, what everyone wanted, though the today's meaning has differentiated. Tattoos have already started their career decades ago. Earlier in 1784 tattoos were worn by people. As it is shown, this maori-one of the first seen by Cook and his crew has unremovable marks in his face. It's not just a creation of the last years, tattoos have been present since about 300 years. They were there to mark themselves indelibly according to their character and interests. Tattoos have kept their popularity since that timing. But not only were they used back then to identify themselves, they had a special function in WW2.
